What roof repairs are common on Sheffield houses?
The same faults come up again and again on local homes:
- Slipped or broken slates. Often caused by rusted nails, which lets slates slide even when they look fine.
- Cracked or loose ridge tiles. The mortar bed ages and lets in water, or tiles lift in wind.
- Lead flashings. Lead around chimneys, abutments and dormers can lift, split or be pulled away.
- Valleys and parapet gutters. Many Victorian terraces have gutters hidden behind a stone parapet. They block with leaves and silt and then overflow into the wall.
- Chimney stacks. Pointing, flaunching and pots can all fail and let water into the room below.
- Guttering and fascias. Blocked or sagging gutters send water down the wall and into the timber at the eaves.
